Welcomers & Guides

As a Cathedral Welcomer you are the first person to meet and greet our visitors. We are proud of the warm welcome our visitors receive, whether they live in Manchester or have flown from the other side of the world. We look for enthusiastic, friendly, and approachable people, who will be comfortable interacting with some of the 170,000 visitors a year.

What you'll do:

• Cathedral welcomers usually give three hours per week on a weekly or fortnightly basis.
• You will act as a reference point for visitors and provide information and help.
• You will signpost visitors to information about the building, future events, and direct them to exhibitions.
• If you wish to enjoy the experience with a friend, we can make sure you volunteer on the same day.

Help us to reveal the history of Manchester and its Cathedral by becoming a Cathedral Tour Guide. The Cathedral is a stunning Grade 1 Listed building, rich in history, located in Manchester's Medieval Quarter. Just across from our south entrance, Manchester Cathedral Visitors Centre homes the 15th century Hanging Bridge, one of the oldest structures in Manchester.

What you'll do:

• As a Guide, your role is to open the visitor's eyes to the Cathedral's history and hidden gems.
• Our guides offer daily tours of the Cathedral, and also show around larger groups who have booked in advance.
• You will generally be on duty for 2-3 hours, morning or afternoon, on a weekly or fortnightly basis alongside our Welcomers and Chaplain.
• Full training is given. An interest in Manchester's rich history and the role of this Cathedral at the heart of this 21st century metropolis is essential.
• If you can speak another language aside from English, this is beneficial, though not essential for the role.
